Helen Durkin has been leader at the 20th Guernsey St Saviour’s Brownies for 25 years and received the Chief Commissioner’s Service Award.

Before becoming a leader Mrs Durkin was a Brownie, a Guide then a Ranger, and has continued to volunteer for quarter of a century.

She was presented was a vase with the Brownie promise badge and yellow flowers.

‘It was fantastic, it made me proud to be recognised,’ she said.

Several guide leaders past and present, including Mrs Durkin’s mum, came along to celebrate the award presentation.

Guernsey’s Girlguiding Commissioner Collette Merrien presented Mrs Durkin with the award on behalf of Girlguiding South West England.

In the citation, Chief Commissioner of Girlguiding South West England Racheal Tattum said that without volunteers like Mrs Durkin, Guiding would not be able to reach the 46,000 girls and young women and help give them opportunities so they can reach their full potential.

She offered her warmest congratulations in completing 25 years with the organisation.

‘I became a Brownie as I went to La Houguette School and most girls there went to Brownies,' she said.

Following on from Rangers Mrs Durkin became a Brownie leader at 18 years old.

Every Tuesday she attends the Brownie sessions and has dedicated hours to inspire, empower and support young girls.

‘I’ve lived in Guernsey my whole life and have been part of Brownies my whole life,’ she said.

‘During every session all the Brownies have smiles on their faces and cheerful attitudes.

‘I will continue to be a Brownie guide leader for as long as I can.'
