The initiative has been running since 2016 and aims to spread Christmas cheer to islanders who are alone during the festive season and may not receive gifts from friends or family.

‘It’s part of our ethos to make sure Guernsey people are looked after,’ said Lions Club of Guernsey president Robert Holder.

Desired items include hats and gloves, socks, books, board games, puzzles, long-life food and Christmas-themed gifts, while alcohol, sharp objects and medication are unsuitable.

Those wishing to donate are being encouraged to consider a reverse advent calendar approach to the project, where instead of receiving something every day, they donate an item every day instead.

‘This is an initiative which has become more popular over the years,’ said Lions Club member Charlotte Horsepool.

‘We expect to be able to put together at least 200 gift bags.’

There are several collection points for gift bags, with these located at Vale, Castel, St Andrew’s and St Peter Port Douzaine rooms.

M&S and Forest Stores have donation bins for individual item donations.

‘The donation bins have been filling up nicely,’ said Miss Horsepool.

The deadline for gift donations is Tuesday 10 December.

  • The Lions Club is also looking for islanders to nominate people they think would benefit from receiving a gift bag. To put forward a nomination email project.sparkle.gsy@outlook.com.
