Father Christmas will be making an appearance at the event, which begins at 5.30pm.

The service will feature a mix of modern and traditional songs and hymns led by the hospital choir, while there will also be several Bible readings by hospital staff telling the Christmas story.

A buffet courtesy of the hospital’s catering team is to be served following the culmination of the service.

Lt-Governor Lt General Richard Cripwell is expected to attend, as is Health & Social Care president Al Brouard.

PEH chaplain Linda Le Vasseur was optimistic that lots of people would come along.

‘People love it, around 80 came last year and we’re keen for everyone who is able to get involved to do so, even those patients who are bed-bound,’ she said.

‘We went round the wards and told patients and staff about it on Monday.

'We are hopeful that those who come will bring their families along as well and make it a happy evening.’

She said those organising the event were conscious of the fact that, for some patients, the service would form part of their last Christmas, and so wanted to ensure that the event fell under the hospital’s holistic care offering.

‘Obviously we take care of patients’ physical and emotional needs but one that isn’t talked about as much is their spiritual needs, which may or may not involve religion,’ she said.

‘Holding a carol service takes care of some of those needs, and I’m proud of the work the staff do to make Christmas a special time for those using the hospital.’
