Gas prices are set to rise 10% from start of the year
GAS prices are set to rise by 10% from the start of 2025.
This increase will mean an average household’s gas bill could increase by about £9.37 a month. Guernsey Energy also increased the standing price of gas by 10% in May and gas tariffs by 8% last January.
‘Geopolitical events across Europe have continued to impact the price of wholesale gas over the last 12 months,’ said Guernsey Energy’s managing director Darryl Goddard.
‘Energy markets are subject to a variety of complex influences which impact our supply chain and keep the cost of services that are crucial to the supply of gas high.
'We understand that tariff increases can be difficult for our customers to manage, but given these circumstances they unfortunately cannot be avoided.
‘We’re continuing to invest heavily across our network and drive forward a comprehensive maintenance programme.’
Older islanders, who are on fixed incomes, are among those facing higher bills.
‘Unfortunately, they have no option, they will feel it when the prices go up,’ said Age Concern Guernsey chairman David Inglis.
‘The prices go up as the pension does.’
He said that increases in prices were difficult, but other service providers in the past had supported the charity through its winter fueld fund to offset the increase in prices.
Support is also available to older islanders through Guernsey Energy's priority scheme, which includes setting up payment plans to spread the cost of their winter bills over the course of a year.
‘Vulnerable customers can register on our priority care scheme, and we will assist them with safety checks, prioritising call outs, energy-saving advice, and by offering payment plans, where customers can spread the cost of their winter bills across the whole year if they sign up to a fixed Direct Debit.’
Across all fuel and light sources in Guernsey, the most recent quarterly inflation bulletin showed there had been an increase in nearly 9% in prices over the last year.
