POSTIES have delivered more than a million items since mid-November, despite a number of network disruptions.

Guernsey Post’s newly appointed CEO Steve Sheridan said that this December had been particularly busy, with about 500,000 of the million items processed being parcels.

‘There has been a 7% increase in December,’ he said, 'after a marginal uplift in the past few years.’

With half a million parcels, that works out at about eight parcels per person in the island.

About 175 posties, plus four casual members of staff, have been delivering throughout December, with the busiest day being Wednesday this week, when festive volumes peaked and more than 25,000 parcels were delivered.

However, it has not all been plain sailing and the company has had network disruption to contend with.

‘Bad weather at the start of December has created operational challenges, but the posties have been tremendous in handling the situation,’ said Mr Sheridan.

‘Our operational team and posties are very experienced at managing large volumes, even in the face of disruption to mail arrival patterns as we have seen in recent weeks.’

This year has also seen the introduction of Guernsey Post’s myUKaddress service, which has added to the festive momentum with islanders making the most of being able to shop with UK retailers who do not ship to Guernsey.

The posties will be out delivering parcels every day from now up to and including Christmas Eve, and the parcel counter will be open until 2pm on Christmas Eve.

‘Things have started tailing off now, but we are still delivering and making sure that everything we have has been delivered by Christmas,’ said Mr Sheridan.
