Christmas Day is the only day of the year that people are allowed to dive in the harbour by permission of the harbourmaster, as there are no scheduled commercial vessel movements.

In the past the annual dive has seen the discovery of shipwrecks and other ruins on the seabed.

Roman Brewer-Marchant was among the people who went searching around the seabed for fresh oysters and historical artefacts.

‘It’s been pretty good, visibility was quite poor at times but we got loads of scallops and some cuttlefish,’ he said.

‘It’s a fun tradition that we do every year at Christmas and with the legacy of stuff that has been found in the harbours on Christmas Day, it is cool to go and see what we can find.’

Aidan Jennings went out diving with his grandfather George Jennings and two-year-old Hunter Jennings, who went out on the boat for the first time this Christmas.

‘It was very cold,’ he said. ‘We got about 70 or 80 scallops.’

Swimming group the Mental Tentacles was also given permission to swim in the harbour with the divers on Christmas morning.
