And extra permanent blue badge spaces are being allocated around St Peter Port.

It is estimated that there are about 13,000 people with disabilities in Guernsey – about one in five islanders.

States disability officer Gill Evans has been working with Traffic & Highway Services and Guernsey Ports on the changes.

‘The States is keen to meet the needs of disabled islanders, and providing more blue badge parking spaces provides more choice for blue badge holders when visiting St Peter Port and other beautiful coastal areas around the island,’ she said.

The 11 new temporary accessible parking spaces are being created at Fort Hommet, Petit Bot, Les Amarreurs, L’Eree, Port Soif, Vazon, Bordeaux, L’Ancresse East, Richmond, Grandes Rocques and Chouet.

The sites were chosen as they are mostly near kiosks and have toilets.

While this is a trial, the change could become permanent if it works well.

Down at the harbour, Traffic & Highway Services is installing permanent blue badge spaces, with more being planned in the future.

An existing space on the New Jetty has been moved closer to the harbour terminal building, while new permanent spaces can be found at the Crown Pier, Albert Pier, Castle Emplacement, and St Julian’s Emplacement.

Extra lines have also been painted at the Crown Pier and North Beach crossing to improve customer safety.
