Legally Blonde in last-minute costume drama

A last-minute costume delivery saved the day as the cast of Legally Blonde took to the stage last night for their opening show.

Pre-show nerves were only exacerbated when the morning of the Elizabeth College show arrived – but the costumes had not.

But a little help from Guernsey Post reassured cast members, who were ready to get the show on the road.

‘The costume mishap was particularly stressful, the outfits were supposed to arrive on Friday and they didn’t so we spent the weekend trying to source them,’ co-director and head of drama Charlotte Newall.

‘There was a lovely lady at Guernsey Post called Mandy who helped us a lot and calmed us down to get them first thing which is fantastic.

‘We’re quite lucky that it’s a modern musical, so most of the cast would have had something to wear and it would’ve been totally fine, but it really does add something having full costumes and allows the cast to feel more in character. It adds so much to a performance.’

In preparing for the show, many students have been balancing their time between the four-night performance and this week's dance festival.

‘Before the costumes arrived I was very nervous, but now I’m excited. There’s a real buzz in the theatre and a sense of pride throughout the cast. I think they’re just eager now to show the audience what they’ve done,’ said Miss Newall.

‘It’s taken a very long time, the show was cast in late April last year and we starting really focusing on it in September, so it’s very exciting.’

Conor Ridgewick, 14, and Eoin Fleming, 16, share the role of Professor Callahan.

‘We’ve put so much effort into it, I’m quite relieved that it’s now here because all of the stress is going to be over,' said Eoin.

'It’s a really big and really good show and I think we’ve done really well.

‘I think it’s going to be incredible seeing all of the seats full and then being hit with that feeling that it’s actually happening.’

Conor said that Blood in the Water was his favourite part of show.

‘I have friends and family coming to watch, and I feel like I can relax more because there’s already a connection with the audience,’ he said.

For some students, the production marked the end of an era and they perform in their last show.

Kathleen Truelove, 17, plays Paulette Bonafonte.

‘We’re in Year 13 and so after this, we can relax,’ she said.

‘We’ve put so much work into it and it’s really rewarding that it’s finally here.

Amelia Garn, 17, plays the lead role of Elle Woods.

‘It’s going to be so much fun, this is our last show which makes it even more special,’ she said.

‘I’m so happy it’s Legally Blonde, it’s my favourite musical and my dream role, it was fate.’

The show involves a live band, first introduced last year for the performance of We Will Rock You.
