Man and dog rescued from south coast cliff face
One man and his dog, were rescued yesterday morning after getting stuck more than 30 metres down a south coast cliff face.
Police, Fire & Rescue, St John Ambulance & Rescue, the cliff rescue team and the coastguard were all called to the cliff at the end of Rue des Tielles in Torteval.
Police said they started getting reports at just before 9am yesterday morning about the incident.
‘We received reports that a man and his dog were stuck down a cliff,’ said police officers at the scene.
‘The man had gone down the cliff after his dog to rescue it.’
Both the man and the dog, which the cliff rescue teams described as a ‘30kg pit bull-type dog’, were back up the cliff safe and well at about 10.30am.
Two members of the cliff rescue team went down the rocks to bring the man up.
‘Two people went down and the dog followed them up,’ said fire and rescue station officer Gary Van Der Linden.
‘We had the coastguard here with his drone, which was a great help in locating the casualty and also liaising with the inshore rescue boat at the bottom of the cliff face.’
Mr Van Der Linden praised the way the incident had been dealt with by JESCC, the emergency services at the scene and the man who was stuck.
‘He did exactly the right thing and called 999 because he was not sure he would be able to get back up the cliff, and JESCC did a great job, so all in all a good quick job.’
The Guernsey inshore lifeboat Harold Hobbs was also called in to help, but was stood down when it was decided to reach the man by land.
The emergency services had left the scene by 11am.
