Squid Game fan creates bloodless offshoot
GUERNSEY’S very own version of popular Netflix show Squid Game will be coming to Les Maingys Activity Centre in March, but minus the blood and guts.
The local version – known as ‘Ormer Game’ – is the brainchild of renowned Guernsey dance coach Debbie Duport, and will see 100 players compete against each other in a number of 'school playground' games in a bid to win money for themselves and for a charity of their choice.
The game costs £10 to enter and £5 to watch, with tickets able to be bought online.
More than 50 people have signed up already.
Mrs Duport said she got the idea for the event a few weeks ago after watching the second series of Squid Game, which has recently come out on Netflix.
‘Almost immediately after watching it I wrote everything down on some paper, and by the end of the week I had ordered the costumes and put this preview together.’
The event will consist of six games suitable for people of all ages, with participants each designated a number before the first game.
Those who are eliminated game by game will be marked with a red sticker by the game’s guards and asked to step to the side of the activity hall and support the remaining players.
Players will continue to be eliminated until the winner emerges following the final game.
‘I can’t reveal what all of the games will be just yet, but “red light, green light” as shown in the real Squid Game will be one of them, as will a tug-of-war,’ Mrs Duport said.
‘Hopefully we will be able to raise at least £1,000, if not more.’
Among those signed up is Theresa Lenfestey, who said she was a ‘big fan’ of Squid Game and had already watched all of the new series. She will be taking part with the hope of raising money for the Cheshire Home.
‘As soon as I found out about this I had to get involved, it will be such a fun thing to do, especially for charity.’
Also participating will be Astrid Cherrie, who was hopeful that she would be able to win the event and raise money for the GSPCA.
‘It’s occurred to me before that holding a real-life Squid Game would be a lot of fun, so long as we didn’t make it completely like the real show,’ she said.
‘I loved the new series, I can’t wait to get involved in this.’
Ormer Game is taking place on the evening of Saturday 8 March. Tickets can be purchased at https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/whats-on/guernsey/rue-maingy-scout-headquarters-venue-might-change-depending-on-numbers/the-charity-ormer-game-squid/e-xjolye.
