Bicycle spaces keep racking up in Town

Rising numbers of commuting cyclists has led to 40 new bike parking spaces being installed next to the Sunken Gardens.

In the summer the racks there are often filled with bikes. The extra racks were installed on Sunday, ready for workers on Monday.

However, the weekend’s storm, which continued into Monday, seemed to have deterred cyclists from heading to town that morning, and the new racks were empty at peak commuter time.

One group welcoming the new installation was the Guernsey Bicycle Group.

‘We are really pleased to see the bike parking being expanded at the Sunken Gardens with so many more people cycling to work and to the shops,’ said GBG secretary Rob Wills.

‘This is a much-needed upgrade.

‘Data shows a sustained rise in cycling so it’s great to see improvements in line with the Transport Strategy, helping islanders be more active, as well as the six recent priorities in the Medical Officer of Health Report.

'Infrastructure improvements like this are vital to making that a reality.’

The new racks have replaced spaces for motorcycles, which have been moved further into the road.

Barrie Duerden from the Better Journeys Project said that bike racks were regularly full and there were often calls for more bicycle parking from the public.

‘When the weather is bad the number of cyclists drops, but there will always be those who cycle in, whatever the weather,’ he said.

‘So it is very encouraging to see the infrastructure here being expanded.’
