The kiosk was historically used for bus information, but has been empty in recent years. While the search for a long-term tenant continues, the charity has taken on the site.

Since 1922 the Royal British Legion has been supporting members of the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, veterans and their families.

‘The whole point of it really is to raise awareness of what the Royal British Legion does in Guernsey,’ said RBL welfare committee chairwoman Marlene Place.

Although people know about the Royal British Legion, they do not necessarily know what it does, she said.

The hope is that people would stop and have a chat and become more engaged with the charity’s presence.

‘We have two branches and the central committee, the central committee is made up of members of the branches,’ said Mrs Place.

It looks after island ceremonial parades, welfare and the Poppy Appeal.

The charity has been at the hexagonal kiosk for the past week and a half, after Mrs Place contacted the States Property Unit to ask if anything was happening to the kiosk while the decision was made about the long-term use of it.

A spokesman for the property unit said it was pleased to help in the short term while the process of finding a suitable lessee continues.

‘We have now produced an initial shortlist from the expressions of interest and have requested further details from those shortlisted,’ he said.

Royal British Legion welfare team member Morag Brock said the kiosk had proved popular.

‘More and more people are stopping to read the posters and what the services are, which is one of the main reasons for us being here,’ she said.

‘It’s trying to make people aware it’s not just a week in November.’

Once a new tenant is found, the charity will get two days’ notice to leave.

The kiosk is manned from 10am to 2pm, possibly 3pm at times, from Monday to Saturday.
