Guernsey’s very own bloodless version of popular Netflix show Squid Game came to Les Maingys Activity Centre on Saturday evening.

Known as ‘Ormer Game’, the event was the brainchild of renowned Guernsey dance coach Debbie Duport, and saw more than 80 contestants battle it out over six rounds of school playground games including Red Light, Green Light; a tug-of-war; and rock, paper, scissors in a bid to win £300 for themselves and £300 for a charity of their choice.

Competition was fierce, with participants giving it their all over the course of nearly two hours, all while being carefully marshalled by Mrs Duport, who assumed the role of Front Woman, and her team of half a dozen workers.

In the end there could only be one winner, and the honour of being the inaugural victor of Ormer Game went to Michael Feijao, who emerged victorious in a final game of rock, paper, scissors.

As well as pocketing £300 for himself, he was delighted to have been able to win £300 for his chosen charity, men’s mental health group Man Club.

‘It feels good, especially to be able to do it for Man Club after the help they gave me a few years ago when I was struggling a bit with my mental health,’ he said.

‘I feel a bit lucky to have won as I actually went out in the first round when we were playing Red Light, Green Light, but fortunately the first time we played was only a practice run.’

Mrs Duport described the evening’s proceedings as ‘chaotic’, but overall was pleased with how things went.

‘Everybody seemed to love it,’ she said.

‘Maybe we will have to do it again later this year once the new series of Squid Game comes out in June.’
