Education, Sport & Culture had attempted to scrap all financial support by 2031. It led to various options being put forward for the future of the financial support.

But the Assembly ended up voting to maintain and cap the colleges’ grant at its value at the end of the current funding agreement next summer – nearly £3m. a year.

There will also be increases in the grant in line with inflation, but reductions should pupil numbers fall, as well as a five-year notice period of future changes.

Blanchelande College, Elizabeth College and The Ladies’ College said they were glad to see that deputies were supporting them.

‘We are grateful to deputies for seeing the valuable role the colleges play in the Bailiwick’s educational landscape, island-wide community and economy,’ they said in a joint statement.

‘We would also like to acknowledge the high level of political, parent and public engagement in this important debate and the significant support we have received from the business sector and other stakeholders.

‘The colleges are also very pleased to have the opportunity to work with other schools and their leaders at a grassroots level and are excited by what might be achieved.’
