Lihou Island’s duck race back on the bill

Lihou’s annual Easter quack-tacular duck race is back and promises to be bigger and better than ever.

The event has been a mainstay in many families’ spring diaries for more than 15 years, but was cancelled last year as the house at Lihou was out of bounds after suffering considerable damage during Storm Ciaran.

Trust warden Steve Sarre said he was overjoyed to have the duck race back in the calendar as it was his favourite fundraising event of the year.

‘We really missed it last year,’ said Mr Sarre.

‘What is better than racing ducks on a home-made slalom in the sunshine?

‘It’s not like any other duck race you may have been to or seen elsewhere’

The event starts in the garden of the island’s main house at 12.30pm on Sunday 13 April.

Ducks will be available to purchase at the event for £5, with all donations and money raised going towards the trust.

There will be about 20 ducks in each race, with 10 races altogether, with the first duck to exit the course being promoted to the next heat.

As well as the duck race, there will be a duck letter hunt around the island and other fun games for all to get involved in, as well as refreshments.

‘It’s a fantastic fun event for the whole family,’ said Mr Sarre.

‘We have 300 ducks primed and ready to go, so there should be enough for everyone.

‘There is normally a first prize of a couple of hundred quid that goes to the winner.’

And Mr Sarre said this year the day comes with an added bonus.

‘As well as all the fun of the duck race you get the chance to be one of the first members of the public to get the chance to step inside our incredible new museum and learn about the fascinating history of our little island,’ he said.
