New Connaught Care Home holds fundraiser

THE New Connaught Care Home's first-ever garden party raised more than £1,400 to go towards a residents' wish list.

More than 200 people enjoyed the fete which was held under sunny skies in the grounds of the home.

Residents donated bric-a-brac, manned stalls and decorated the area with plant-filled pots, while relatives and supporters baked cakes, donated raffle prizes and performed live music for free.

Neither the Connaught nor the adjacent Jubilee Home has ever staged fundraising events before. Manager Emma Gershon said: 'When I came here three months ago and brought up the idea of a fundraiser I asked residents what would be on their wish-list of things to buy.

'They said they would like materials for arts and craft activities, like card making, and they would like to go on an outing – a boat ride or a meal out together.

'Also on the list was having more done to the garden and for the sun lounge in the Jubilee to be revamped. I've a feeling the list is going to get longer.'

More fundraising activities are being planned for Christmas.

Ms Gershon thanked everyone who had supported the event, and extended particular gratitude to Claire Cotton at Greenfingers for work on the garden.

Ms Gershon added: 'I have never ever known generosity, support and community spirit like I've witnessed on Alderney and it completely warms my heart. I feel very privileged to be part of the community here.'
