Supermarket alcohol sales would prove 'disastrous'

RELAXING Alderney's liquor laws would spell 'disaster' for Alderney's 'pub culture' and 'increase the degeneration of the island" according to some residents at this month's People's Meeting.

The Policy and Finance Committee has commissioned law officers to look at how existing ordinance might be amended to let shops sell alcohol in Alderney.

The move came, residents learned, in the wake of a conversation with Sandpiper CI around the latter potentially opening an Iceland store in Alderney, from which it could sell alcohol as well as frozen goods.

The People's Meeting debate stemmed from a request by resident Mike O'Gorman for that the States to consult the public before making any further moves to change the licensing laws.

Chief executive Victor Browlees said he thought the review of liquor licensing laws was 'well overdue'.

'My view is that government should get out of the way of business as much as possible,' he commented.
