Nativity gets an Abba-themed makeover
CHRISTMAS stars met the stars of 1970s disco as Herm School's annual nativity introduced Mamma Mary, an Abba-themed retelling of the story of the birth of Jesus.
With only six little actors in the school this year, it was a challenge for teacher Mary Carey to tell the story of so many characters with such confidence, but every year they all manage to pull it off.
Mary and Joseph, played by Emy Hastings and Ethan Dyer, are visited by an angel who tells them they are going to have a baby.
The angel (Ffion Dobson Jones) filled the church with her little angelic voice and a version of The Winner Takes It All that made everyone a little bit misty-eyed.
Joseph promptly proposes to Mary – 'I do, I do, I do, I do, I do' – and soon tells them they have to go to Bethlehem by donkey.
A bored innkeeper (Oscar Nicholls) with dreams of fame sees the chance of putting his inn on the map and making some 'Money, Money, Money' by letting the prophecy come true in his stable.
A disco-loving shepherd finds his hill being brightened by the glitzy angel who dances him all the way to the baby Jesus.
And the three kings (played by Harry Moore with a crowned teddy bear on each shoulder) make their way to join the party.
They entertain Jesus with 'Mamma Mary' and 'Chiquita' and entertained the audience with their musical numbers and happy smiles.
Head boy Brandon Hastings is the only Year 6 pupil, making this his last nativity concert at the school. He has done a great job over the years and his energy and enthusiasm always rub off on his fellow actors.
For all those in the island, this is the official start of Christmas.
Now we can look forward to the end of term and some real community and family time.
