Concern raised over incinerator's toxicity
CALLS have been made for experts to be drafted into Sark to test toxic chemical levels at its incinerator over claims it could be linked to cancer cases.
Tomaz Slivnik, who lives in the island and has studied possible cancer links, said he was seriously concerned about the potential links between the incinerator and the prevalence of the disease in the island.
Mr Slivnik said he wanted both air and soil samples from near to the incinerator to be analysed to measure the level of dioxins – toxic compounds released during incomplete burning of plastics.
He is also calling on Chief Pleas to put any plans for a new incinerator on hold and to explore alternative options, such as shipping waste to Jersey.
'This is a serious issue and we should at least seriously investigate it,' he said.
'I think, in the long run, we should get rid of the incinerator and get rid of our rubbish in a different way.
'A better way of disposing of our rubbish would be to ship it to Jersey.
'There are serious indications that something is wrong.'
