Inter-island electricity cable proposal receives positive feedback

OVERWHELMING positive feedback has come from Sarkees over the proposal to install an electricity cable between Guernsey and the island.

A series of meetings were recently held, last week to lay out the plans and a good proportion of Sark's population attended.

UK-based energy and fuel poverty expert Derek Lickorish travelled to the island to help advise the Sarkees on the project.

He said there had been a great response, with 170 people at the Island Hall evening meeting, 40 at another meeting and a packed gathering at the Mermaid Inn.

'I've been told there has not been a bad word said,' he remarked.

'I think most people realise something has to happen.'

Concerns were raised about the cost of the cable, but as it would be paid off over the cable's 25-year lifespan, it would be cheaper than the current set up.

There were also worries about using nuclear fuel and what would happen if the island's population continued to fall.

But Mr Lickorish said most people were focused on looking at the future.
