The issue needs to be tackled now in companies across Britain and the islands, said Nita Clarke, keynote speaker at the annual conference of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

Ms Clarke, pictured, has been an adviser to the UK government on employment and union issues.

She helped to lead a review into the importance of engagement to the economy, published in 2009 as the MacLeod Review.

Now she is devoting her energies to driving success through engagement – which was the theme of the CIPD conference.
