THE States apprenticeship scheme is to be reviewed to ensure it is still appropriate for today's business world.

The Education Department has commissioned Dr Elaine Monkhouse, also chairwoman of Skills Guernsey, to conduct an independent review of the scheme.

It wants to be sure that the scheme meets the needs of a changing economy and delivers the professionally-recognised qualifications and skills that employers and students need.

'It is a very popular scheme, but looking at the island's employment profile now, we need to make sure that the skills requirements are mirrored in the scheme,' said Alun Williams, lifelong learning manager at Education.
