THE new Channel Islands aircraft registry, 2-Reg, will put Guernsey on the aviation business map, one of the senior figures behind the project has said.

Wim Ovaa is executive director of Netherlands-based SGI Aviation, the company which won the tender to operate the registry on behalf of the States for the next 30 years.

'We believe that 2-Reg is a truly unique register – it is the only registry in the world to use a single number and it is a natural market which will put the Channel Islands on the map for the business aviation community,' he said.

Mr Ovaa, pictured right with director of civil aviation Fergus Woods, added that the project had taken more than 18 months to complete from the time the company agreed a contract with the States to take on the responsibilities of running the registry as an outsourced provider.

'It has been a lot of work and not always easy, but if it was easy, many other registries would have done it,' he said.
