Nine local students worked over the summer with a number of the island’s digital companies including Cortex, Resolution IT, First Central Group, PwC, Deloitte, EY Channel Islands and the Digital Greenhouse.

The six-week paid internship was designed for students who are passionate about the digital world. Working on projects for local employers to develop their digital and creative career pathways, the interns gained hands-on experience, building data systems, shadowing cyber incident first responders and testing software programmes.

‘Working in partnership with local businesses to provide young people with an insight into career routes in Guernsey is hugely valuable and has had such a positive impact for those who have taken part over the past six years,’ said Ben Wratten, programme and engagement manager at the Digital Greenhouse. ‘It has been fantastic to see the interesting projects that the students have worked on over summer, developing their skills in a range of areas and highlighting the breadth of innovative companies we have operating here in the island.’

At the presentation evening, the interns spoke about the projects they had been working on, which ranged from marketing projects, programming and web development to data reporting and learning about data forensics.

‘This internship has definitely helped with future career choices as I now have experience in this industry and I now know what I do and don’t enjoy about this line of work,’ said intern Jared Sarchet, who was placed with First Central Insurance & Technology Group.

‘I would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in a career in the digital area.’

Samantha Preece, who did her internship at Cortex, said: ‘I would encourage anyone considering this opportunity to take it. It is a great experience and allows you to understand how your skills translate into a real-world environment. Participating in the internship has confirmed my decision to pursue a career in software development.’
