A COMMUNITY nurse who is always ready with a hug and a friendly word is how Patricia McDermott is described by her nominator.

Pamela Mauger has put Miss McDermott forward for the Ravenscroft-sponsored Angel of the Year Award.

Miss McDermott is the consultant clinical nursing specialist for urology at the PEH but her work regularly takes her out into the community.

‘I’ve known her for quite a long time and I’ve been for 12 treatment sessions,’ said Mrs Mauger.

Miss McDermott had a high standard level of care to all her patients, she added.

‘She will always go that extra mile. She’s very friendly and helpful and you can talk to her when you have any worries.’

Those worries need not relate directly to the treatment, either, she said, adding that Ms McDermott had been helpful to her over another member of her family’s serious illness.

‘She can give me a hug and that makes me feel better afterwards.

‘It’s just things like that that help me through.’
