Pride of Guernsey: Sarah Hoyte
IN THE MIDDLE of the night in March of this year, Karen Lane had a stroke as a result of a torn artery lining. Her partner, who does not drive, contacted Mrs Lane’s sister Sarah Hoyte, who helped with her son as she went to hospital and she has been looking after her and her family, as well as her own, since then.
Ms Hoyte, 43, has now been described as a ‘rock of strength’ by her sister and has been nominated for the Specsavers-sponsored Carer of the Year Award.
‘My sister Sarah has been my rock,’ said Mrs Lane, 50.
‘We would not have been able to cope without her – she sorted out the insurance, has driven me around, arranged my appointments, contacted work for me – it was such a shock at the time, so she has been a real support.
‘It’s going to be a slow process of up to 24 months before the doctors said they’ll know what I will and won’t be able to do, but my recovery is going well.
‘My sister to this day still takes me shopping and my 13-year-old son to his after-school activities and all of this despite having two young children herself and having Ehlers-Danlos syndromes.
‘She’s been selfless.’
