Voting for the more than 140 nominees opened at 10am on Tuesday. By yesterday morning more than 7,600 votes had been cast. There has been a particularly large number of votes cast in the angel, carer and customer service categories.

Guernsey Press editor Shaun Green said he was pleased with the strong response.

‘It’s wonderful to see the people of Guernsey getting behind the Pride of Guernsey awards and voting for their favourite candidates,’ he said.

‘There is a great array of nominees this year from all walks of island life.

‘It cannot be easy to pick which ones to vote for and I will be really interested to see who gets onto the shortlist.’

There are 13 categories, including young achiever, arts contribution, overcoming adversity and teacher of the year.

Islanders can vote for as many nominees as they like, but they can only cast one vote per nominee. Voting closes on Friday 30 August.

The three most popular nominees in the each category will make up the shortlist.

A judging panel will then select the overall winners, which will be announced at a ceremony in October.
