They are the link to our past and family heritage. They often are selfless, unsung heroes, putting others before themselves, and are the ones who help us to appreciate the importance of family and how, more often than not, it’s the simple things that truly matter.

And with all that 2020 has brought with it so far, perhaps one of the most powerful lessons we learned was recognising and appreciating our family, especially our grandparents.

Throughout the coronavirus pandemic there were many heartbreaking stories of families being separated, grandparents forced to quarantine for safety and family life being turned upside-down.

This whole experience has brought a new respect for our elderly generation and how easily we can take family for granted.

This year, The Channel Islands Co-operative Society are now more than ever incredibly proud to be sponsoring the Grandparent of the Year award. During the several years that your society has sponsored this award, we have heard many humbling and heart-warming stories. Stories about selfless, unsung heroes, times where individuals have shown strength and dedication.

There have been tales of generosity, love and kindness shown not just within a family, but in the community.

Grandparents are often the ones who overcome difficulties and adversity with modesty and humility, which is why we believe now should be their opportunity to shine, and for us to truly say ‘thank you’.
