Neighbour of the Year: Marion Ashdown

BEAUTIFUL Christmas cakes, cups of tea and shopping runs are just some of the neighbourly things which Castel resident Marion Ashdown has done.

Nominated for the Guernsey Gas-sponsored Neighbour of the Year award by Roy Holland, Mrs Ashdown was described as a ‘shining star’.

‘Her home is open to all her neighbours,’ he said.

‘When her neighbours fall on hard times, Marion would offer to take them shopping or out for a meal.

‘Marion is also a volunteer working for the hospice at weekends cooking their main meals.’

He added that she was on the go all the time and that he could not keep up with all the aid that she provided both to neighbours and non-neighbours alike.

‘She’s a marvellous person,’ he said.

‘I’ve lived at my house for about 14 years, known her for about three years and hand on my heart I’ve never met anyone like her.

‘When I had an operation she came and helped buy all my food and look after me.

‘It’s good to have neighbours like that and they are hard to come by these days.

‘To be honest everybody who has been nominated deserves an award, they all deserve a pat on the back.’
