Because of his tireless efforts, he has been nominated for the Guernsey Gas-sponsored Neighbour of the Year award.

Mick helps out in a variety of ways and his neighbours say that nothing is too much trouble for him.

One neighbour said: ‘Mick helps all the elderly people on this estate. He helps me with all the heavy lifting. I never ask him, but he will always offer to take my green waste to the tip or take some bits to Longue Hougue. He’s done some really great things for us.’

Mick tackles general DIY and gardening for her, plus takes her for a drive.

Neighbours know that Mick is dependable and he makes life that little bit easier.

‘Mick’s always cheerful even though he’s not always well. He helps a lot of other people here and has a lovely garden. Whatever the need he’s really nice, it is a lovely estate.’

Knowing that Mick is around gives his neighbours peace of mind.

Another neighbour said: ‘I’m a pensioner, I live on my own and am partially sighted. If ever I need anything doing, Mick is there. I had a bed delivered and he put it all up for me and has put fencing up for me in the garden.’

If he can do it, he will.

‘He can’t keep still – and won’t take anything in return. So I normally have a barbecue in the garden in summer and invite him and his wife over to give something back.’

Mick’s neighbours would love for his selfless devotion to others to be recognised and would be proud if he won the award.

‘He’s just marvellous, I’ve never met anyone like him.’
