‘I feel well-placed to comment on the performance of the staff, both individually and collectively,’ said nominator Mike Spiller, who had spent in total 11 months on the ward.

‘As a rehabilitation ward they inherit patients who face great challenges and then support them through their recovery.

‘Every day represents a major challenge as they prepare patients for resuming the normalities of life after discharge.

‘The team are well led by Sister Olwen Bain-Brehaut and they all make up a cosmopolitan group from many cultures who gel together really well.

‘They have a great team spirit among the team.

‘I could pick out individuals by name, but that would not be appropriate when all the individuals make up the team.

‘I would most strongly recommend the staff of the Le Marchant Ward for the award.’

‘This is a huge honour for us. Le Marchant Ward relies on team effort,’ said Sister Bain-Brehaut.

‘Quality of life means different things to different people. It might be being able to drive again or to walk unaided or it might be learning to brush your teeth or change the television channel. For some it can mean being able to go to the supermarket unaided. The routine parts of our life that we mostly take for granted can be huge challenges.

'To work with someone and watch while they race through their targets is truly an honour.’
