Pride of Guernsey: David Harry
DAVID HARRY has been nominated for the Sports Volunteer award, sponsored by Sure.
‘My grandpa loves volunteering for sports and says he has had great times going all over the world for the Commonwealth Games,’ said his nominator, his granddaughter Ellen Brouard-Walters.
‘My grandpa has always been a keen cyclist for years and he has volunteered in many different things.’
One of those things has been the Island Games, where he was an attache to delegates from the various islands throughout the Games.
‘My grandpa decorated the front of his house for the Isle of Man team as a few of the athletes stayed up the road from him and he wanted them to feel welcomed,’ Ellen said.
They did fee welcome, with the Isle of Man’s men’s and women’s football teams and even the Manx sports minister visiting his decorations, which included a Manx cat and fairy bridge. An unmissable red banner wished the team good luck and greeted them in Guernesiais.
David has been involved in sport for all his life. His passion has been cycling ever since he started racing in 1968, and although he has stopped competing now, he can still be found on his bike and teaching others how to cycle.
For eight years he was the chairman of the Guernsey Commonwealth Games Association, and vice-chairman for 10 years prior to that. ‘It’s great to be involved with these people in the international community,’ David said.
‘You’re getting involved in the friendliness of it all.’
