‘Jim has been raising money for the charity Tripsfund for many years,’ said his nominator, who wishes to remain anonymous.

‘He collects secondhand goods and sells them on. The money raised is used to pay for the young people of Alderney to travel off-island on a variety of trips.’

‘As a teacher who initially started in 1982 I’ve always been involved with fundraising within schools, as well as arranging a variety of trips away to various locations,’ Jim said, who estimates that he has raised tens of thousands of pounds over 23 years of fundraising.

‘I started Tripsfund here on Alderney due to realising the costs involved in getting off the island, as well as the need to use hotels invariably on the route out and on the way back to the island. A great deal of social experiences can be achieved by letting the youth of Alderney experience different countries and cultures. Our two Iceland trips we contributed to were a great success as well as a geographical enlightenment. Trekking through the Pyrenees for two weeks tested the students from St Anne’s stamina and endurance, these examples are just a small sample of groups of individuals we have funded.

‘I am not alone in what Alderney’s Tripsfund achieves. We have a great deal of support as well as following on the island, and it is these individuals I would offer my thanks to.’
