For this year’s 75th anniversary of the end of the German Occupation, tickets had sold out across all events.

Specsavers’ event organisers have been reviewing the evolving Covid-19 situation and government advice regularly.

Co-founder Dame Mary Perkins said the decision was taken ‘with a heavy heart. At this time, we understand the need to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone in our community’.

‘Regrettably, this means we have decided to cancel the Tea Dance and Hangar Ball, which we know so many people were looking forward to.’

Three celebrations were scheduled to be held at Beau Sejour on 7 and 9 May, with 800 islanders due to attend each one.

The events are a chance for wartime survivors to remember loved ones lost, reminisce and celebrate freedom.

‘Right now the health and wellbeing of our team and the island community is our priority,’ said Dame Perkins.

The tea dance is open to islanders who lived in Guernsey, were evacuated, or were in the services through the Occupation.

Most if not all attendants would be categorised as at high risk from the virus.

All ticket holders for the Hangar Ball will be automatically refunded the full amount including the booking fee in due course.
