Wipe down your door handles and letterboxes
ISLANDERS are being asked to wipe their door handles and letter boxes daily to protect the islands’ delivery staff.
Newsagent Lesley Le Page delivers the Guernsey Press and nationals to customers daily.
‘It’s definitely still important to get your post and paper delivered at this time, but I would like people to clean their door handles and letter boxes each morning to keep us safe, which in turn would keep the wider community safe too,’ she said.
‘I think it would be a good precautionary measure to help limit the spread of any infection in the community.’
The Guernsey Press recently announced that it is offering free regular delivery of the newspaper to any new customer over the age of 65 for a period of six weeks, with the help of local newsagents.
If you are used to buying your paper from your local shop, but are now unable to because you are staying indoors, please email newsroom@guernseypress.com or call 240244 from Monday at 8am with your name, number and address and we will ensure that your details go straight to the newsagent in your area.
Guernsey Post has also been asking customers for help by keeping their distance from their postie.
Where customers do not have a Safeplace but the postal item is too big to fit through the letterbox, Guernsey Post is asking customers to display a leaflet near their delivery point.
The leaflet will be delivered to all households later this week and when displayed will signal to the postie that the customer is at home and that the item can be left at the door.
Posties will knock on the door or ring the doorbell to signal the delivery.
CEO of Guernsey Post Boley Smilie said the company was strictly adhering to the States of Guernsey’s advice on social distancing. ‘Our delivery staff are staggering their start times to reduce the number of people in our sorting office at any one time.
‘Some of our customers will see their postal items arrive earlier in the day than normal, and some will see their items arriving later than normal.
‘In addition, some non-essential services will also see changes so that we can better utilise our resources.
‘For example, our early morning collections from a small number of post boxes have been suspended with immediate effect and our Smith Street Post Office will close at 4pm, rather than 5pm, until further notice.’
