1800s and another from the ’60s, sparked a procession of memories for ‘Mrs K’, who decided to share them with Shaun Shackleton

I’M IN the living room of Mrs K, a 97-year-old hearing about days gone by.

At such a grand age, she’d be the first to admit she has seen more days gone by than most.

‘I found the [pictures of the Market] as I was looking through some old photographs with my cousin, John,’ she explained.

‘He lives in Canada. The family went to Vancouver before the war. He loves Canada.’

Mrs K was born at what she calls ‘the north end of the island’.

‘Pleinheaume, near where the pet shop is now, in a big house called L’Almont. It’s changed names since then.

‘My dad worked for George Roussell, he was a grower. Tomatoes. We moved to this house in 1931 when I was 11 years old.’
