Willkommen to the Kit Kat Klub
Shaun Shackleton took a front-row table as students from the Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre got ready to put on a Cabaret...
They say that life is a Cabaret (old chum) and this is particularly true for performing arts students at the Guernsey Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre. The famous all-singing, all-dancing play is the school’s latest production and it’s currently rocking the rafters at the Princess Royal Centre for the Performing Arts.
Set in Berlin in 1931, the story follows newcomer Cliff Bradshaw as he immerses himself in the city’s decadent cabaret scene – in the form of the seedy Kit Kat Klub – falls in love with the alluring Sally Bowles and witnesses the rise of fascism.
Both ground-breaking and controversial when it had its debut more than 50 years ago, Cabaret’s themes are just as relevant today.
‘We do show a swastika and one reason why we do is that it flags up the rise of extremism and what happens when you don’t challenge it,’ said head of performing arts and the production’s co-director, Mat Walters.
The Grammar School and Sixth Form production of Cabaret is at the Princess Royal Centre for the Performing Arts. At the time of going to print there were still a few tickets left for tonight’s 7pm performance. They are £7.50 and available from www.guernseytickets.gg or at the box office on 749999.
