Student sees fashion shoot picture published in Vogue

FEATURING in Vogue Italia was not on Brittany Chippendale’s agenda when she began modelling part-time while at university.

The Guernsey native worked with the University of Sussex student fashion magazine Fabrik while studying media practice.

In January an image from a Fabrik Calvin Klein-inspired shoot by photographer Pablo Santana made it into the global leading fashion publication.

Miss Chippendale said, ‘I started off doing a job in Guernsey for my friend Olivia Younger modelling for Becky Rowe Jewellery. I wasn’t sure how I’d translate through the camera but had such a great time.’

Images from that shoot gained recognition in the UK.

‘I got a couple of messages from fashion students in Brighton which kick-started it all. I ended up in the Vogue issue and got messaged by quite a few agencies. I was shocked by that as I was used to being my own manager – though I don’t know if I was a very good manager.’

It was a surprise that Vogue selected the image.

‘When Pablo told me we got onto Vogue I was really shocked. I couldn’t stop smiling and was in disbelief. It was always a dream of mine to be in Vogue but I never thought it would actually happen. I’m incredibly grateful for that and to work with such wonderful people who made that dream come true.’

No goals are set at the moment: ‘it’s just something I really enjoy which has snowballed into paid work. I love working with small independent brands because it’s like a family. Working with students the concepts are amazing, really experimental. The best part 100% is the people I work with and the lifelong friends I’ve made from modelling.’

A favourite memory was doing ‘a shoot for a lady who’s been making jewellery for 20 years who never decided to showcase her stuff. I was the first model she worked with and she was so lovely and so excited.’

Doing her first runway was a rush: ‘I hardly looked at the camera pit and had six different outfit changes, which was mad. For one slot I was wearing these crazy latex boots which went to the top of my leg with a latex blazer. One of the models had to go home so I was literally having clothes torn off me.

‘Another memorable moment was getting my first magazine cover. Also, at one point I wore outfits that apparently Kendall Jenner had shot in a few days before, that had been shipped straight over from wherever she was shooting. It was so weird wearing exactly the same clothes.’

Friendliness and willingness to get out of the comfort zone has allowed these opportunities, alongside a healthy dose of

caution.

‘I’m picky with jobs and research whoever contacts me before showing up. Being friendly has been really important to everything gaining traction. Most make-up artists I speak to are surprised I’m so chatty and say a lot of models sit in silence on their phone. I’ve had a very good experience and the teams are always fantastic. I have a lot of respect for everyone on set. Everyone is an important element in making a shoot happen – without one person you see a dip in how it all runs.’

Elements of acting and individualism keeps it dynamic.

‘I enjoy trying out different poses, attitudes and really engaging with the photographer. I feel like I’ve changed into a hundred different people through modelling. You adapt to the persona of the vibe needed and have more control than meets the eye. You get styled and given a concept, but as the one posing you have a lot of creative control. You can bounce around ideas and have a real influence, sometimes adding a whole dynamic. I enjoy feeling like I am contributing as well as just being there.’

At university Miss Chippendale has been filming documentaries and doing field work, and otherwise is a keen cook and artist.

‘Mainly on the side I do university work and fitness. I work as a student ambassador and at Hook, and sell illustrations for a bit of extra money. I’m very lucky to have my course part-funded by Sovereign Arts in Guernsey, who I do a big piece for annually. I’m really, really grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had.’

Moving forwards, Miss Chippendale said: ‘I would like to end up in a bigger conglomerate, but wouldn’t like to not enjoy it or be pressured because I have university work. I was due to go to castings with agencies but due to current circumstances I’ve had to come home. If it does become a bigger thing that would be amazing, but I don’t have my heart set on being a model – I’m just seeing where it takes me. If you’re in the sea and you’re freezing it’s best to be bubbly about it and throw yourself in there.’
