BMW is one of the masters of the premium SUV, and it’s just revealed the latest version of the one that kicked it all off – introducing the new BMW X5.

The latest SUV from BMW takes on a new design, grows in size and is available with a choice of four engines

The fourth-generation X5 brings a new look to the nameplate – taking on the latest BMW corporate design, with an enlarged version of the iconic kidney grille fronting a boxier aesthetic.

It’s grown in size, too. The car’s overall length has increased by 36 mm to 4,922 mm while height and width are as well – by 66 mm to 2,004 mm and 19 mm to 1,745 mm respectively.

A split tailgate has been introduced to the car in an effort to improve accessibility to a boot that’s capable of loading up to 645 litres of cargo with all five seats in place – increasing to 1,860 litres when the middle row is folded down.

As for engines, three will be on offer in the UK — two diesel and one petrol. All are 3.0-litre straight-six units, with the two diesels offering 261 bhp or 395 bhp and the petrol 335 bhp.

Regardless of engine choice, power is sent through all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

New driver assistance features are available for the SUV too. ‘Parking Assistant’ can do more here than just automatically park a car, it’s also capable of autonomously reversing the X5 by 50 metres along a path already trodden forward – ideal for getting out of tight spots with oncoming vehicles on country lanes.

Standard interior equipment on all X5 models includes leather upholstery along with heated and electrically adjustable seats — while M Sport models gain trim-specific pedals, coloured piping and steering wheel.

The new BMW X5 is now on sale in the UK, with prices starting at £56,710.
