A 25MPH speed limit will be introduced in 81 lanes and parts of roads on the island.

The changes were confirmed at the last meeting of the States after efforts to stop them were defeated.

Glategny Esplanade, Braye Road, Le Friquet and Sandy Hook are among some of the routes affected. Others that are close to main centres and an area around Blanchelande College are also included.

Addressing some of the public reaction to the proposed changes, Environment & Infrastructure president Barry Brehaut said: ‘The hysteria really did get out of hand. We’re not seeking to introduce an island-wide limit of 25mph.’

More people could be encouraged to cycle or walk by improving safety on designated roads, added Deputy Brehaut.
