Divers to survey breakwater after storms

AN INSPECTION has revealed no further damage to the seaward side of the Alderney Breakwater.

Recent storms dislodged sections of masonry on the top of the upper wall both on the outside and the inside faces along the first third of the Victorian edifice, and deposited large granite boulders on its walkways.

It sparked concerns that even worse damage had been caused to the seaward side of the breakwater, which bears the brunt of storms and strong tides.

Breakwater manager Lee Cauvain said: ‘There did not seem to be any obvious damage to the breakwater above water on the seaward side. Underwater it may be a different story.’
