To mark the 50th anniversary of the Wombles, Alderney resident Sally Pond is creating a new geocache challenge with all 12 of Liza Beresford’s loveable characters as the object of the hunt.

Wombles creator Liza Beresford lived on Little Street in Alderney for many years.

‘I bought a collection of all 12 miniature Womble toys from ebay, not really knowing what I was going to do with them,’ said Sally.

‘Then, because it was the 50th anniversary of the Wombles [and] I thought it would be nice to do something with them to commemorate it, I had the idea of using them in a geocaching trail.’

Sally asked people to donate plastic jars in which to put the toys and added trinkets from the jumble sale and a notebook for geocachers to write their names in.

‘We are just waiting for approval from Marcus Robertson, Liza’s son, and then I hope to put a worksheet in the Visitor Information Centre for geocachers to take.

‘I’m also thinking of adding a little note asking people to pick up some litter while they do the trail. I think that would be a good way to remember the Wombles.’
