Railway Society’s trip helps celebrate Easter
ALDERNEY islanders celebrated Easter with a host of events.
These included a charity bingo evening, an Easter egg hunt and a disco.
Bell-ringers at St Anne’s Church rang a peal to mark the start of the Alderney Heritage Festival and the tower’s shutters were opened so the whole town could enjoy the magical sound of the 13 bells.
Hand-knitted gifts and artisan baking were on display at the Saturday craft market stalls in the town centre, while Alderney’s volunteer fire brigade turned out to support the local KFA Dance troupe in a charity car wash and cafe at the Butes Centre. The car wash was to help the girls raise money towards off-island competition travel costs.
Alderney’s HSBC staff put on the Easter egg hunt and free refreshments in the town’s memorial garden.
The Alderney Railway Society kicked off its summer season of excursions with an Easter bunny run for youngsters. They met the bunny, who arrived on a vintage motorbike, and gave each one of them an egg.
Alderney Art Club’s spring exhibition also opened this week entitled ‘Step through the door’ while the first event organised by the new ‘Alderney Week’ team was a junior fun afternoon in the Island Hall, where junior master of Alderney, Kelan Digney, 9, and junior Miss Alderney, Anna Tangkam, 11, were crowned.
On Good Friday, the Alderney Football Club organised a bingo evening in the Island Hall, which raised £1,700.
Dougal Bohan, manager of the radio Station Quay FM, did the calling and presented the £500 jackpot prize winnings to Dominika Jacobowska, from Poland and her nine-year-old daughter, Aleks.
The disco evening on Easter Saturday, also in the Island Hall, saw 15-year-old Poppy Taylor crowned Miss Alderney 2018.
And at 6.30am on Easter Sunday, the open air ‘Sunrise’ Church Service was held on the Butes Sports Field. The ecumenical service, with representatives from the Methodists, the Catholic Church, St Anne’s Anglican congregation and the Salvation Army, was conducted by Methodist Minister Elizabeth Bellamy. This was followed by breakfast at the nearby Methodist Hall.
