It’s cool to be a junior soldier, says Alan, 7

Alan Lorimer, 7, made the commitment in front of a 30-strong congregation that included his parents, John and Clarinda, headmaster Martin Winward and several teachers.

Over the past two decades the only other junior officer was Alexander Brownlees – who sent a video message to Alan from his new home in America.

Alan had to make a formal promise and say a prayer to signify his commitment and beforehand undertake a six-week course called Totally His.

Alan has been going to services at the Salvation Army Hall on the High Street all his life with his parents and more recently his little sister, Emily.

Alan outlined what being a junior soldier entails: ‘We have to make lots of promises and keep them and help out during the services, such as with collection.

‘I really like helping and I really like playing the tambourine. I think it’s quite cool we make promises to God.’
