Alderney resident shows off the island he loves

IN AN attempt to get companies to invest in travel links to Alderney and increase visitor numbers, one man has uploaded a vlog onto Facebook of footage taken over the last five years.

Caneron Cairnduff’s vlog, which is on Facebook and YouTube, is his way of showing local politians that digital marketing is the way to go.

The video was viewed 10,000 times within two hours of being uploaded.

Creator Cameron Cairnduff said he made the vlog because he wanted to show people how amazing Alderney was and to show the island’s politicians that marketing had changed.

‘The feedback has been incredible and I’m finding that it’s really made an impact with the local politicians, who have agreed to hear my thoughts and suggestions about digital marketing going into the future. Mission accomplished,’ he said.

‘Over the past decade Alderney has seen a decline in visitor numbers due to multiple factors, including transportation problems and the high cost of travel, but also high cost of living and lack of local opportunities.

‘Here’s the argument that I’m tired of hearing: “We want more planes, we want a ferry, a more reliable service and we want it now”.

‘But how can any airline be expected to invest in a route that is not be profitable?

‘If Alderney can market itself to different groups of people all year round, then the demand will put pressure on transportation companies, like Aurigny, who will see the island as a sound investment.’

To get more publicity for the island, Mr Cairnduff said he had sent his video to hundreds of YouTubers and travel bloggers, most of whom have more than one million subscribers, in an attempt to get them to visit the island to make their own videos.

He also tweeted the video with the hashtag #visitmyisland to the likes of Apple’s Tim Cook, Virgin’s Richard Branson and Microsoft’s Bill Gates as he believes ‘if you want to make an impact go straight to the top’.

Although he went to school in Hampshire, Mr Cairnduff returned to the family home in Alderney most Friday evenings and went back to school on a Monday morning.

‘We never took family holidays because Alderney gave us all we needed to enjoy ourselves,’ he said.
