Glasgow 2018 comes to a close

Hundreds of thousands of people attended sporting and cultural events in and around the city for the European Championships.

Fans took to the streets for the final day of the European Championships in Glasgow.

Glasgow 2018 is the biggest sporting event the city has hosted since the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Glasgow staged six sports – aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, golf, rowing and triathlon – while Berlin hosted the athletics.

The big draw on Sunday for Glasgow 2018, after 11 days of competition, was the men’s cycling road race.

Heavy rain led to several crashes as cyclists sped around city streets lined with spectators, with Italy’s Matteo Trentin taking gold.

Athletes from the Russian Federation were handed the inaugural winning nations trophy at a ceremony in George Square after collecting 31 gold medals.

George Square also hosted the closing party for the games, organised by Celtic Connections and featuring Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara and long-running “acid-croft” folk fusion band Shooglenifty.

Prior to the weekend, organisers said 140,000 tickets had been sold and more than 220,000 people had attended free sport and cultural events.
