A boy who went into cardiac arrest after being hit with a police Taser has been discharged from hospital.

The 17-year-old needed immediate CPR after collapsing at a takeaway after being Tasered by officers responding to reports of a fight in Coventry on Saturday.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said the boy, who had been in a serious condition, was now well enough to be released from hospital.

Meanwhile, the watchdog is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident which happened in Prior Deram Walk at about 9.30pm.

The Taser used during the incident will also be examined.

Four other boys, three aged 17 and a 13-year-old, were arrested but have since been released under investigation, according to West Midlands Police.

Nobody has been charged in connection with the incident, which also saw a police car’s windscreen smashed and two officers suffer minor injuries.

The force referred itself to the IOPC following the incident, and the watchdog decided to begin an investigation on Monday.

An IOPC spokesman said: “Our investigation into police contact with a 17-year-old boy who was taken to hospital following an incident in Coventry on September 1, is continuing.

“We understand the teenager is now well enough to have been discharged from hospital.

“We have arranged to meet the boy’s family shortly and we have gathered witness accounts from the officers involved, along with CCTV.

“A Taser which was discharged during the incident will be analysed.”

He added: “There is limited body-worn video footage which we will also review.”
