Wedding carriage procession a disappointment for some royal fans

Many of the royal watchers compared the lack of occasion to the pomp and ceremony of Harry and Meghan’s wedding carriage ride.

Royal fans have expressed disappointment at the length of the carriage procession after some waited in Windsor for days to get a glimpse of Princess Eugenie on her wedding day.

Kerry Evans, from Lincolnshire, arrived on Tuesday to secure a spot on the route of the procession.

The 54-year-old said: “I was very interested in the whole procession and the ceremony and the pomp and [Prince] Andrew led us to believe that that was what he wanted, for it to be on equal par with the last wedding.

“I expected to see military behind, where were the Coldstream Guards? And I’m thinking, really, that isn’t a procession.”

The policing costs were increased by the 1km carriage ride – and it was made shorter than that taken by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in May, because Eugenie, who is not a working royal, and Jack did not head up the Long Walk like Harry and Meghan, but take a shorter route back to the castle.

The 30-year-old from County Durham said: “I did Harry and Meghan’s wedding and it was a much larger affair.

“I’m thoroughly disappointed that we didn’t have the general horse displays and the military aspect.

When asked if he would attend other royal events, he said: “Well I won’t miss it, of course I’ll be back.”

Richard Lamb, 64, from London, said: “It seemed like they could have spent a bit more time. I know the security was very high but it was over very quickly.”

A mother and her daughter, attending their first royal wedding, also said they were underwhelmed.

Hannah White, 23, from Oxford, who had waited three hours to see the procession, said: “It was amazing to see the carriage, but we were wondering if there was going to be a bit more than that.”

Her mother Caroline Lewis, 50, from Cardiff, said: “I was expecting to see the other royals.

“I did think they might have followed her around the block or something, that would have been nice as I was so excited about it.”

Miss White said despite it being over quickly it was “an exciting atmosphere” among crowds on the route.

Royal fan Sky London, 58, said: “I support Eugenie but I was disappointed at how quickly it came by.

“It was quicker than with Harry’s wedding.”

Alpa Joshi, from Watford, said she could see Princess Eugenie thank her as she called out her best wishes.

Ms Joshi, 47, who has been in Windsor since Tuesday, said: “I shouted out to her: ‘Congratulations Princess Eugenie, we love you’ and she looked at me, she waved and said thank you.

“I was hoping it would be an open top carriage but it doesn’t matter because she had the window open.”
