‘Little hero’ Lucas hailed by police for quick thinking after grandad’s collapse
The five-year-old was given a commendation after calling 999 when his diabetic grandfather fell ill at his home in North Yorkshire.
A five-year-old boy has been praised for his “fantastic decision-making” and bravery after calling 999 when his grandfather collapsed.
Lucas Carter Wright, who has been called a “little hero” by police, called the emergency services when he found his grandad Gary unconscious at his home in Catterick Village, North Yorkshire, on Saturday.
In a recording of the call, Lucas can be heard saying: “My grandad’s ill and he needs an ambulance.”
Seven minutes after Lucas’s call, Pc James Bowie arrived at the scene and treated his grandad.
Thanks to the information Lucas provided, the control room was also able to locate the youngster’s mother, Alex Wright, who confirmed Gary was a diabetic, police said.
On Tuesday, North Yorkshire Police Assistant Chief Constable Ciaron Irvine visited Lucas at his primary school in Ingleby Barwick.
He was awarded a commendation from North Yorkshire Police and also given an early Christmas gift in recognition for his quick thinking and bravery.
“He acted quickly and calmly, showing a maturity way beyond his five years, and because of the action he took and his courage to make the call, his grandad Gary is recovering well.
“All of us at North Yorkshire Police would like to say a massive well done to Lucas and we have extended an invite to him to come and visit our Force Control Room in York, as all the staff are very keen to meet this little hero.”
