Two dead boa constrictors found in ditch at playing field
One snake had been dumped in a bin liner, while the other was spotted lying in the grass.
Two dead boa constrictors have been found in a ditch at a playing field.
The snakes, measuring 5ft (1.5m) and 4ft (1.2m) in length, were spotted in Coventry by a member of the public on Sunday, the RSPCA said.
The smaller snake was discovered in a bin liner, while the other was lying in the grass in the area just off Woodway Lane.
The RSPCA said it is not known if the snakes were already dead when they were abandoned some time between Saturday night and Sunday morning – but it is suspected they both perished in the cold.
“It just seems too much of a coincidence that both snakes would have died naturally around the same time so I suspect they were alive when they were left.
“The larger one appears to have been moving away from the bag but it was very cold on Saturday night and they wouldn’t have survived for very long.”
Ms Smith continued: “Snakes aren’t able to regulate their own body temperature so need to be kept at specific temperatures in order to survive
“Both snakes were underweight too so it appears they were not properly cared for.
“It is disgusting that someone has chosen to just dump their pets and leave them to die – it is just so callous.
“We believe people are unaware of how much of a commitment these animals are, and once they grow in size they can no longer cope.”
The RSPCA is appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
